In the forest of Fontainebleau south of Paris, firefighters managed to gain the upper hand and contain Wednesday's flare-up. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the next 12 hours would be decisive for ending the wildfire in the Madrid region.
Regional authorities in southwest France reported that the wildfire there remained stable. In Greece, several fires broke out around the country, fueled by gale-force winds, adding to the challenges faced by emergency services.
