Ukraine strikes radar defending Russian resort city Sochi

Ukraine's armed forces have reported striking a radar installation that helps defend the Russian Black Sea resort city of Sochi from aerial attacks. According to Ukrainian military officials, the system was specifically designed to detect and stop drone strikes, and it has now itself become a target.

The strike comes just over a week after Ukrainian drones already reached the Sochi area, setting two fuel depots on fire. That earlier attack damaged infrastructure tied to fuel storage and marked a rare instance of Ukrainian strikes reaching the southern resort city, which lies far from the front line.

Sochi has traditionally been regarded as one of the safer locations within Russia due to its distance from the Ukrainian border and active combat zones. The city is also known as a frequent destination for President Vladimir Putin and hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics.

The repeated strikes in this region suggest Ukraine continues to extend the reach of its drone operations deep into Russian territory, including areas previously considered relatively shielded from such attacks. Damaging or destroying the radar system could affect Russia's ability to detect and intercept further drone strikes in the area.
