Ukrainian drones strike Moscow oil refinery overnight
Overnight into Sunday, Ukrainian drones carried out a large-scale attack on the Moscow region, damaging an oil refinery. Russian officials say more than 150 drones were shot down over 24 hours.
Moscow and its surrounding region came under a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack overnight into Sunday, damaging a facility within the territory of the city's oil refinery. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed the strike, adding that no casualties were reported and emergency services were working at the scene. Russian officials have not yet provided further details on the extent of the damage.
Videos circulating on social media show a large fire and thick black smoke. Ukrainian media, citing monitoring channels and eyewitness footage, reported that the fire broke out at a plant in Moscow's Kapotnya district. The location and scale of the fire shown in the videos have not yet been independently verified.
Attack lasted several hours
According to Sobyanin, the assault on Moscow continued for several hours, with air defense forces shooting down more than 150 drones heading toward the capital over a 24-hour period. The attack also caused temporary flight restrictions at Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports.
The targeted refinery has previously come under Ukrainian drone attack as well — in June, a strike sparked a fire that temporarily halted its operations. The facility is considered one of the most important fuel suppliers for the Moscow region.
