Ukrainian drones strike oil refineries in Russia's Tatarstan region
Drones struck industrial facilities overnight in the city of Nizhnekamsk in Tatarstan, home to several major oil refining and petrochemical plants. At least two people were killed and 12 injured in the attack.
Residents of the Russian city of Nizhnekamsk reported hearing drones overhead early Sunday, followed by a series of explosions. City mayor Radmir Belyaev confirmed that industrial facilities had been damaged, though he did not name them specifically. A fire broke out at one of the affected sites.
According to the mayor, at least two people were killed in the attack and 12 others were injured.
A major refining hub
Nizhnekamsk is one of Russia's key oil refining centers. The city hosts the TANEKO industrial complex, considered one of the country's five largest oil refineries and a major producer of diesel, jet fuel and gasoline. Nearby is the TAIF-NK oil refinery, as well as the Nizhnekamskneftekhim plant belonging to petrochemical company Sibur.

On Sunday, Ukraine's Armed Forces General Staff reported that Russian troop losses in the war since the February 2022 invasion had reached 1,506,900 soldiers, with 1,520 killed or wounded over the preceding 24 hours. The General Staff also cited equipment losses, saying Russia has lost more than 12,300 tanks, nearly 514,300 drones and over 148,000 vehicles and fuel tankers since the invasion began. Ukrainian officials note that exact loss figures are difficult to verify due to ongoing combat.
