Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles launched a large-scale attack on the city of Balakovo in Russia's Saratov region overnight on 14 October, according to regional governor Roman Busargin. The strike comes amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine, in which both sides regularly use drones against targets on each other's territory.
What the governor said
Writing on Telegram, Busargin said that several residential buildings were damaged. Based on preliminary information, one person was killed. The governor later added that all infrastructure facilities in the city were operating as usual.
Independent media findings
The outlet Astra analysed footage from eyewitnesses and determined that one of the damaged houses stands only a few kilometres from the Balakovo combined heat and power plant. The plant is the city's main source of heating.
The source provides no further details on the consequences of the attack. It does not specify how many drones took part or what the targets were.
