A Ukrainian drone reached Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug for the first time, sparking a fire at an energy facility in Novy Urengoy. The region supplies most of Russia's natural gas production.
Authorities in Russia's Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug reported on Wednesday that the region was struck by a Ukrainian drone for the first time. Regional governor Dmitry Artyukhov said debris from the drone caused a fire at an industrial facility in the city of Novy Urengoy.
Artyom Zhoga, President Vladimir Putin's envoy to the Urals Federal District, provided further detail, confirming that the drone struck an energy complex in the Yamal region.
A strike at extreme range
What makes the attack notable is the distance involved: Novy Urengoy lies roughly 2,800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. The strike demonstrates Ukraine's growing capability to hit targets deep inside Russian territory, including regions previously considered largely out of reach due to distance.

The Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug is one of Russia's most strategically important energy regions, accounting for about 80% of the country's total natural gas production.
