Yandex, the Russian internet and technology company, said on October 9 that a drone strike hit its data center in Kaluga, in central Russia. According to the company, several modules of the facility have been completely disabled. It is the second strike on Yandex data centers within two days during Russia's war against Ukraine.

The company warned that some of its services may experience disruptions. The full extent of the damage has not yet been determined. In its statement, Yandex said: "We continue to assess the state of the infrastructure. It is very difficult at this point to give a timeline for restoring equipment operations at the data centers." It thanked partners for their patience and cooperation, users for their understanding, and employees who, it said, are working day and night to keep services running.

After news of the attack, Yandex shares fell by about 4% on the Moscow Exchange.

The earlier strike in Sasovo

Overnight on October 8, Ukrainian forces hit a Yandex data center with drones in the city of Sasovo in the Ryazan region. A fire broke out. No one was injured, but the facility temporarily halted operations. The outage affected some of Yandex's own services as well as companies that relied on its Sasovo infrastructure, including the websites of state rail operator Russian Railways, mobile operator MegaFon and several Russian media outlets.

What local authorities say

Kaluga Governor Vladislav Shapsha said on October 9 that Ukrainian drones struck the regional capital and several municipal districts. He said nine people were injured in Kaluga, but did not specify which facilities were targeted.
