Ukrainian AI Drones Autonomously Engaged Targets, Including Soldiers
Two years ago, ten AI-driven Ukrainian drones autonomously identified and destroyed targets, including soldiers, raising ethical concerns. Ukraine publicly denies using such technology without human oversight.

According to a report in New Scientist, an experiment conducted two years ago in Ukraine involved ten drones controlled by artificial intelligence (AI) that autonomously identified and destroyed targets, including soldiers. This has sparked renewed debate over the use of autonomous weapons systems on the battlefield.
Andris Ambainis, a professor of computer science at the University of Latvia, commented on AI's impact on future warfare, referencing an internet joke that the machine revolution will start when a programmer lazily asks "ChatGPT" to write code for autonomous weapons.
The rapid development of unmanned systems—air, land, and sea—has been a key factor in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. These systems are now crucial for success at all levels. Experts are now focusing on the next logical step: automation of these systems using AI.
In Ukraine, AI is already used for data analysis, planning, and system control. It helps with navigation, target identification, and assists operators in the final moments of a suicide drone attack. However, Ukraine's official stance remains that its armed forces are prohibited from using AI for autonomous decision-making without human control.
