Brax unveils “Wink” smartphone with physical keyboard and privacy switch
Brax is taking pre-orders for the compact “Brax Wink” smartphone, which has a detachable QWERTY keyboard and a physical switch for disabling privacy-sensitive features. It starts at 480 euros, with first deliveries promised for July 2027.
Technology company Brax is taking pre-orders for a compact smartphone, the “Brax Wink”, which has a physical QWERTY keyboard and a dedicated privacy switch, unlike the large glass-screen phones that dominate the market. The device starts at 480 euros, but first deliveries are promised only in July 2027, so buyers are relying on hardware that has not yet reached customers.
Privacy switch and software
The switch sits on the top edge of the phone and lets users change privacy settings instantly, without searching through software menus. In the system settings, users can choose what the switch turns off: the mobile network, microphones, cameras, location tracking or other sensors. Flipping it back restores normal functionality.
The phone runs “BraxOS”, a modified operating system without Google services. It has two modes: the full “Omni” mode for running apps, and a minimalist “Communicator” mode for calls, messages and essential functions. A data-only mode is also available, which disables traditional calls and SMS.
Encrypted communication is not automatic. It works only with selected contacts through the “Brax Messenger” app, while regular calls and text messages remain in the standard format.
Specifications
The keyboard is detachable, leaving the four-inch OLED screen free of a virtual keyboard. The phone has a MediaTek MT8875 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, expandable with a microSD card up to 1 TB. The rear carries a 50-megapixel camera, and the body keeps both a USB-C port and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
The capacity of the built-in battery has not yet been officially confirmed. The manufacturer plans to offer an additional battery module later.
Support
Brax promises software updates until 2030 and security patches until 2032.
