The incident occurred in the municipality of Bernau am Chiemsee, where Söder was a guest at the celebrations for the town's 1100th anniversary and was about to deliver a festive speech. According to eyewitnesses, the man suddenly emerged from bushes and threw a tomato at the head of the Bavarian government. Security officers from the local criminal police (LKA) who were providing protection immediately intervened and apprehended the attacker, who was then taken into police custody. German media reported that the detained individual is a 31-year-old German citizen. Söder was not injured in the incident; he wiped the remains of the tomato from his left ear with a napkin and continued on his way. Despite the brief delay, his speech proceeded without further incidents. Witnesses expressed concern that the attacker managed to get so close to the Bavarian premier. The incident comes days after German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt warned of a deteriorating security situation in the country and raised the assessment of the terrorist threat to a high level. Meanwhile, the Bundeswehr believes that Germany has belatedly realized the scale of hybrid attacks from Russia, but in recent years its political leadership and security structures have been increasingly drawing public attention to this threat.
