Germany recorded a record warm night as temperatures reached 29.4 degrees Celsius, according to the German Meteorological Service (DWD). The record was set in Kubschütz, Saxony, in eastern Germany, based on preliminary data.

The previous record was recorded in 2003 at Weinbiet mountain in Rhineland-Palatinate, with a low of 27.2°C.

A heatwave is affecting large parts of Europe. On Sunday, temperatures in eastern and southeastern Germany are forecast to reach 39-41°C, and possibly 42°C in the Lusatia region. The DWD has also warned of severe thunderstorms with rain, gusts, and hail.

On Saturday, Germany recorded a record high daytime temperature of 41.5°C at Dresden station in the east, surpassing the previous record of 41.3°C set the day before in the southwest.

Temperatures are expected to drop slightly on Monday to 29-32°C. Police announced that at least seven people have drowned in Germany since Friday.

The DWD noted that climate change is leading to more extreme weather events, such as prolonged heatwaves, and data shows an increase in the average number of days with temperatures above 30°C.
