Germany knocked out of World Cup in shocking loss; coach and referees face harsh criticism
Germany suffered an early exit from the 2026 World Cup, losing to Paraguay in the first knockout round. The defeat has sparked a wave of criticism targeting head coach Julian Nagelsmann, questionable refereeing decisions, and the team's playing style.

Germany's national football team has once again failed to live up to expectations, exiting the 2026 World Cup in the first knockout round after a loss to Paraguay. This marks the third consecutive early elimination for the four-time champions, prompting widespread backlash at home.
Criticism of coach and officials
German outlet "Bild" called the exit "the next German football nightmare." Head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who took over in 2023, has become the primary focus of criticism. Former Germany defender Arne Friedrich stated that Nagelsmann must take responsibility and predicted the team could move on without him. Fellow ex-defender Thomas Hitzlsperger noted that Nagelsmann has not handled the situation well in recent months.
Controversy also surrounded a disallowed goal by Jonathan Tah in extra time, after VAR ruled a foul on Paraguay's goalkeeper. Former player Alan Shearer called the decision "terrible," accusing the goalkeeper of deceiving the officials. Jürgen Klopp, former Liverpool manager, criticized Germany's performance throughout the tournament, saying they chose the wrong approach against an aggressive opponent.
Nagelsmann's future
Nagelsmann acknowledged the criticism but refused to resign unless asked by the German Football Association. "I will not step down just because we exited so early. If the association wants me to continue, I will," he said.
Analysts believe Germany needs not only a coaching change but also a shift in playing philosophy, as the team lacks the physical dominance and aura that once intimidated opponents. Two other coaches have already been fired during this World Cup: Tunisia's and South Korea's.
