Over 1,000 Afghan refugees remain stranded at a camp in Qatar since 2021
More than 1,000 Afghans who fled their homes in 2021 are still living in isolation at Camp As-Sayliyah in Qatar, unable to leave, despite many having assisted U.S. forces during the war.
For nearly five years, more than 1,000 Afghan refugees have remained stuck at Camp As-Sayliyah in Qatar, unable to move forward to a new life. They left their homes in 2021, the same year the Taliban retook control of Afghanistan and U.S. troops withdrew from the country.
Many of the people held at the camp assisted American forces during the war effort in Afghanistan. Despite that history of cooperation with the U.S. military, they have spent years isolated at the camp with no ability to leave.
The prolonged situation shows that whatever process was meant to resettle these refugees has stalled indefinitely, leaving over a thousand people in a state of limbo for five years running.
