The Latvian government decided at its meeting on 20 October to honour two people for contributions to the national economy and to the country's international profile, according to information published by the official portal “LV Portāls”. Businessman, film producer and director Andrejs Ēķis will receive a Certificate of Recognition, while agronomist Edgars Ružs will receive the Cabinet of Ministers Prize.

Recognition for the film industry

Ēķis was recognised for his contribution to the development of Latvia's film sector. The government says he helped attract foreign investment, foster international cooperation and make Latvia better known as an appealing location for filming. Projects carried out under his leadership made a significant contribution to the economy by promoting business activity, employment and growth in related service industries.

Prize for an agricultural entrepreneur

Edgars Ružs is a board member of the company SIA “ASNS Ingredient”, the founder and long-time head of the farmers' cooperative “LATRAPS”. He receives the Cabinet Prize for helping to attract foreign investment and thereby strengthening Latvia's international competitiveness.

ASNS Ingredient is developing an innovative, high-value-added and export-capable product and its production in Latvia, while promoting sustainable food solutions. The project aims to build the most modern pea-processing plant in Northern and Eastern Europe.

About the awards

The Cabinet of Ministers Prize is given for significant work or merit in the development of a democratic, law-based Latvian state, in economic or public activity, or in other areas important to the country. The Certificate of Recognition expresses the government's appreciation to private individuals for outstanding achievements in the economy, science, education, health, environmental protection, public administration, culture, sport and national defence. It is presented by the Prime Minister or the relevant sector minister at a ceremony marking the Restoration of Independence Day and the Proclamation Day of the Republic of Latvia.
