The Latvian government is set to consider today, 20 October, the introduction of part of the national defence service (VAD) system in the State Border Guard (VRS). The decision will be conceptual, meaning ministers will assess the basic principles rather than final details.
The State Border Guard is the institution responsible for the security of the country's border. The national defence service is a system, part of which is planned to be applied to this institution as well.
The information available so far is very limited. It is not known to what extent or on what timeline the service might be introduced in the Border Guard, how many people it would affect, or how it would be funded. Such details may become clear after the government meeting.
