Valmiera Municipality Plants Eight Oak Trees on Its Fifth Anniversary
Valmiera Municipality celebrates its fifth birthday by planting oak trees in Valmiera and seven administrative units. The oak symbolizes strength and Latvian identity and appears on the municipality’s coat of arms.

On July 1, Valmiera Municipality marked the fifth anniversary of its creation with a symbolic ceremony: eight oak trees were planted across the region. One oak was planted in the city of Valmiera itself, while the other seven were placed in each of the municipality’s administrative units.
The choice of the oak is deliberate. The tree is featured on the municipality’s coat of arms and is Latvia’s national tree, representing Latvian spirit, thoroughness, stability, and strength. Officials noted that the oaks will serve as a reminder that today’s decisions shape the future and that everyone is responsible for the development of their community.
Jānis Baiks, chair of the municipal council, wished the municipality continued growth while preserving traditions and creating new opportunities for residents. He emphasized the importance of people feeling a sense of belonging and happiness. Deputy chair Ričards Gailums expressed hope that the municipality would be proud of its residents and vice versa.
Another deputy chair, Guntis Gladkins, recalled that the goal of the regional reform was to create a stronger local government. He stated that much has been accomplished in five years and that a unified municipality makes it easier to address challenges and implement larger projects.
Valmiera Municipality is now one of the strongest and most competitive in Latvia. It is diverse and rich in traditions, bringing together stories from Burtnieks, Strenči, and Rūjiena. Its residents are active, love nature, and take pride in their roots.
