Earlier reports suggested Valve was discontinuing replacement batteries for the original Steam Deck LCD model, sparking worries that users could no longer purchase and install the crucial part themselves. However, Valve quickly responded.

As of 5 PM ET, Valve spokesperson Kaci Aitchison Boyle told The Verge that iFixit plans to have batteries back in stock by next week. iFixit will receive the same OEM parts sourced through Valve's partners, as always.

Initially, iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens confirmed that Valve had indicated it would no longer make replacement batteries or screens for the Steam Deck LCD. But by afternoon, Valve and iFixit had arranged a new supplier. Wiens stated, "I want people to know we are going to find a way to get batteries for these things."

Wiens praised Valve as a "great partner" and suggested the issue stemmed from incorrect forecasting of replacement part demand.

It's worth noting that the Steam Deck LCD was discontinued in December 2023, so upcoming EU regulations requiring user-replaceable batteries by February 2027 do not apply. US right-to-repair laws often exclude game consoles.

Replacing the battery is not easy—it is strongly glued in place and requires careful removal to avoid fire risk. Valve previously admitted dissatisfaction with the adhesive. Electrically removable adhesives exist but are expensive initially; they might become available in the aftermarket at an extra cost.

Overall, despite initial concerns, Valve and iFixit have reached an agreement to ensure Steam Deck LCD owners can still obtain batteries.
