New Grass-Fed Beef Product Line Hits Latvian Stores, Aims to Save Endangered Meadows
A new beef product line labeled “Natural Meadow Product” has launched in Latvia, supporting the preservation of natural meadows that cover only 0.9% of the country.

Starting this week, Latvian consumers can purchase a new line of beef products marked with the “Natural Meadow Product” label. These products come from cattle raised in natural meadows, an ecosystem that now occupies just 0.9% of Latvia’s territory and is among the most endangered.
The product line was developed by Cēsu gaļas kombināts (CGK) in cooperation with the Latvian Fund for Nature (LDF) and the Latvian Rural Advisory and Education Centre (LLKC). It continues the brand previously created by LDF, which focuses on meadow management and product traceability.
Natural meadows are vital for biodiversity—they host hundreds of plant, insect, and bird species. However, without regular management, they become overgrown and disappear. Grazing is one of the most effective ways to preserve these areas while allowing farmers to produce high-value products. Every such product contributes to the future of nature.
Inga Muižniece, agriculture expert at LDF and creator of the brand, notes that modern consumers want to know the origin and environmental impact of their food. This line combines local origin, quality, and transparent production, giving farmers a more stable base and motivation to expand meadow areas.
Ieva Piteronoka-Krišāne, Chairwoman of the Board at CGK, states that this product line is an example of combining quality food production with care for nature, and that partnership between processing and agriculture can create sustainable products.
The grass-fed beef products are recognizable by the “Natural Meadow Product” logo, which LDF created in 2024 under the “LatViaNature” project. Since 2026, LLKC has handled brand development, while LDF oversees certification. The products are available at CGK's “Gaļas bode” stores in Cēsis and Rīga, at Āgenskalns Market.
