The Latvian Ministry of Health has launched a pilot project under which patients at Pauls Stradins Clinical University Hospital (PSKUS) will receive prescribed antibiotics for free after discharge, for up to one month.

The initiative is seen as a potential step to improve access to medicines, but pharmacy organizations have expressed confusion and requested clarification from the Ministry. Uncertainties remain regarding funding and long-term sustainability.

Some observers suggest the project may be linked to the upcoming election period, and its effectiveness has yet to be proven. Currently, the project is limited to one hospital.

Latvian Radio reports that pharmacies are puzzled and await the Ministry's response. The exact start date and conditions of the project have not been disclosed.
