The Battle of Cēsis: A Turning Point for Latvian Statehood

On June 23, 1919, one of the most important battles of the Latvian War of Independence came to an end. The Estonian army achieved a decisive victory over the Baltic German Landeswehr and the German Iron Division in the Battle of Cēsis. This victory marked a turning point in the most difficult phase of Latvia's struggle for independence.

The Battle of Cēsis lasted from June 19 to 23, and its outcome was crucial for the Provisional Government of Kārlis Ulmanis. The defeat forced the Landeswehr and German units to retreat, paving the way for the consolidation of Latvian statehood. This battle is often seen as a symbolic moment that determined whether Latvia would preserve its independence.

During the battle, Estonian forces, supported by Latvian units, managed to halt the offensive of the German and Landeswehr troops that threatened the newly established Latvian state. The victory was significant not only militarily but also politically – it strengthened the position of the Latvian Provisional Government and its international recognition.

Today, June 23 is celebrated in Latvia as Līgo (Midsummer), but in a historical context, this date recalls the heroic struggle for national independence. The victory in the Battle of Cēsis remains one of the cornerstones on which Latvian statehood rests.
