Incident near Alcatraz

A pontoon boat sank near San Francisco's Alcatraz Island on Tuesday, according to Mayor Daniel Lurie and city authorities. One person was killed, two were missing, and 16 were rescued. The US Coast Guard confirmed search-and-rescue efforts were ongoing Tuesday afternoon.

KTVU Fox 2 captured video of a red boat partially submerged in the water. Several people were receiving medical attention, but the extent of injuries remained unclear. Initial reports indicated a fire had broken out, but San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen said at a press conference there was no indication of a blaze.

San Francisco Fire Lt. Mariano Elias described the vessel as a "pontoon pleasure boat." The incident occurred about 600 yards (548 meters) from the island. Live video showed a man and a woman wrapped in blankets sitting near an ambulance. One person was given CPR, Elias said.

Spokespeople for the San Francisco Fire Department and the Oakland Police Department did not immediately respond to inquiries about the fire's origin. Millions of visitors visit Alcatraz Island annually to see the famous former prison, once home to some of the nation's most notorious criminals.
