Vingegaard to sit out remainder of season after Tour de France collarbone injury
Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard will not race again this season as he recovers from a broken collarbone suffered during this year's Tour. The Dane will also miss September's UCI Road World Championships in Montreal.

Jonas Vingegaard, the 29-year-old Visma-Lease a Bike rider, will not compete again this season while he recovers from a broken collarbone sustained during stage 15 of this year's Tour de France. He crashed after his front wheel slid out while negotiating a tight right-hand bend off a roundabout, landing heavily on his shoulder. The injury required surgery.
The crash ended Vingegaard's hopes of a third Tour de France title. Tadej Pogacar went on to win the race, claiming a record-equalling fifth yellow jersey.
Vingegaard will also miss the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, Canada, in September, where Pogacar will attempt to win a third consecutive world title.
Vingegaard said a recovery period had already been planned following the Tour de France, but the collarbone injury delayed the start of his training, making it impossible to return to top form in the near term. He said his focus is now on preparing for the 2027 season, with specific goals to be discussed with his team in the coming weeks.
Earlier this season, Vingegaard won the Giro d'Italia, becoming only the eighth male rider to win all three Grand Tours - the Tour de France, Giro and Vuelta a Espana.
His crash occurred on the same day that fellow rider Remco Evenepoel criticised the early-morning doping tests conducted during the Tour as "inhuman", noting that Vingegaard had been woken at 02:00 and Pogacar at 05:00 local time for testing.
Marc Reef, Visma-Lease a Bike's head of racing, said the number of race days Vingegaard had already completed this year was a factor in the decision, alongside the collarbone fracture, to end his season early. The team will work with Vingegaard over the coming weeks to plan his training and goals for 2027.
