Fifteen people, including Indian nationals, were killed when a speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc island in Vietnam. The incident occurred in the Hon May Rut Ngoai area, about 10km (six miles) south of Phu Quoc, the country's largest island.
Senior local Communist official Nguyen Tien Hai said authorities were still working to confirm the exact number of fatalities and survivors. According to VnExpress, Hai suggested the boat may have capsized due to heavy winds and high waves.
"The top priority is rescue, bringing all victims ashore and focusing all efforts on providing emergency care to those who are still alive," Hai said.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed being "extremely saddened to learn about the tragic news of a boat accident involving Indian nationals" in Vietnam. In a post on X, he offered "sincere condolences to the families who lost their loved ones" and prayers for the injured survivors' recovery.
The Indian embassy in Vietnam described the event as "tragic" and published the full list of 32 Indian nationals who were aboard the capsized boat. The embassy also set up telephone hotlines to "provide information and assistance to affected families."
