Volvo EX60: an electric SUV that breaks with brand tradition

Volvo's new electric EX60 crossover departs significantly from the brand's petrol models both inside and out, introducing a fresh design language and strong technical specs. The base version will start at 75,000 euros in Europe.

While Volvo's electric EX90 clearly carries over design cues from its petrol-powered siblings, the new EX60 electric model takes a very different path. On the outside, it resembles a wagon more than a typical Volvo, featuring an unusual rear side window shape and door handles that work as pull-out tabs rather than conventional grips. In several details, including the rear window design, the EX60 shares more similarities with the smaller EX30 electric model than with Volvo's larger vehicles. The boot features a deep under-floor compartment that boosts cargo space and provides a place to store charging cables or smaller items securely. There is no seven-seat option, reportedly to avoid competing with the larger EX90.

Volvo has also revised its naming system: the tested version is called P10 AWD and produces 510 horsepower, which the brand now considers a mid-range output. Above it sits the P12 with 680 horsepower and a range exceeding 800 kilometers, while the single-motor P6 delivers close to 370 horsepower with a range above 600 kilometers. All versions support charging speeds up to 340 kW and come with a built-in 22 kW onboard AC charger.

An unconventional cabin

The interior surprises with an oval-shaped steering wheel, which along with the mirrors is adjusted using buttons built into the wheel itself. Aside from a crystal volume control knob, little else feels like a typical Volvo cabin. The instrument display sits far forward near the windshield, eliminating the need for a head-up display. There is no traditional glovebox, but the cabin includes a photochromic roof and a high-performance onboard computer. Even the seatbelts serve a marketing purpose, carrying a reference to 1959, the year Volvo became the first manufacturer to introduce three-point seatbelts.

With acceleration under five seconds and a one-pedal driving mode available, the car demands driver attention, though its chassis tuning stands out as particularly refined. The top P12 version carries a 117 kWh battery, while even the more modest P10 variant is priced from 75,000 euros in Europe.
