To enhance public awareness, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) has created a new section titled “Threat to Latvian Airspace” on the portal 112.lv. It compiles advice on how to act when potential aerial threats are detected. Additionally, the site now includes information to help distinguish combat drones from hobby drones.

According to VUGD, hobby drones are small and compact, typically up to 50 cm in diameter, equipped with four propellers, a camera, and visible lights. In contrast, combat drones are generally larger, often featuring wings or a significantly bigger body, resembling a small aircraft. Combat drones usually lack identification lights.

Another key difference is the noise they produce. Hobby drones emit a quiet buzz only audible nearby, while combat drones generate louder, lower-pitched noise similar to an internal combustion engine, moped, or motorcycle. This sound can be heard from a greater distance.

Flight patterns also differ: hobby drones fly close to the operator, often hovering or making short maneuvers. Combat drones can autonomously fly tens or even hundreds of kilometers along a preset route. The operator's location varies as well: hobby drone operators are usually nearby and visible, whereas combat drone operators may be many kilometers away.

Regarding public response, the website states that seeing a hobby drone generally does not warrant concern, provided flight regulations are followed. However, if an object resembling a combat drone is spotted, experts advise not to approach it and to immediately call 112.
