watchOS 27 beta: Siri AI turns the Apple Watch into a true wrist computer
The new Siri AI features in the watchOS 27 developer beta make the Apple Watch more versatile, allowing tasks to be performed from the wrist without needing the phone.

The watchOS 27 developer beta introduces Siri AI, significantly improving the Apple Watch's usability and turning it into a true wrist computer rather than just a timer and weather tool. Unlike previous versions, Siri AI offers a consistent experience between the watch and iPhone – queries and answers are identical regardless of the device. According to David Clark, Apple's senior director of software engineering for watchOS, the goal is to ensure users get the same answer no matter which device they ask.
One key change is that Siri AI can perform more complex tasks, such as reminding you when you leave a location rather than just time-based reminders. It can also open notes and reminder lists synced across devices. For example, while shopping, you can ask Siri to show a list of thread colors and then check off found shades directly from the watch.
The new single tap gesture allows selection, complementing existing pinch and wrist flick gestures. Combined with Smart Stack and raise-to-talk, it enables easy one-handed use. Workout Buddy, the AI-powered motivational fitness coach, has been upgraded: it now analyzes trends more deeply, such as recognizing when you achieved a certain pace despite elevation and congratulates you. The new App Launcher quick menu simplifies access to frequently used apps.
However, Siri AI isn't without drawbacks – it takes time to build the habit, and latency occasionally occurs. It also can't perform all queries, like weather-based reminders, but offers alternatives. It doesn't proactively give health advice but can answer scientific questions like "What is LDL cholesterol?" Overall, watchOS 27 feels like a culmination of the past three to four years of updates, finally making the Apple Watch a useful wrist computer.
