Waymo recalls over 3,800 robotaxis over software issue that could drive into closed freeway construction zones

Waymo is recalling over 3,800 of its self-driving taxis due to a software issue that could cause them to drive onto closed freeway construction zones at speed, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) bulletin. The company is working on a fix and has restricted freeway driving.

Waymo told Engadget that it voluntarily restricted freeway operations last month while making improvements, proactively notified regulators, and filed a voluntary software recall with NHTSA. The company noted that such recalls are a notice of intent to fix the issue, not a removal of vehicles from service.

This is the second recall in just over a month. In May, Waymo recalled 3,791 robotaxis after a vehicle drove onto a flooded road in San Antonio. Earlier, the fleet was recalled because some robotaxis failed to stop for school buses with stop signs and flashing lights.

Despite these issues, Waymo says its autonomous fleet has generally performed well. According to its safety impact page, Waymo vehicles have been involved in 92% fewer serious injury or worse crashes compared to human drivers.
