Privacy First

On Monday, WhatsApp announced that users will soon be able to communicate using usernames instead of phone numbers. The move is part of the company's ongoing effort to boost user privacy. "Usernames are our latest step to make WhatsApp even more private," the company stated in a blog post.

How It Works

When the feature launches, users can choose to hide their phone number when messaging someone for the first time. There will be no directory or suggestions; people must know exact usernames to initiate contact. WhatsApp, which boasts over 3 billion users globally, expects to roll out the feature over the coming months and will notify users when it's available in their country.

Reserving a Username

To reserve a username, users need the latest version of the app. They can navigate to Settings > Account > Username. WhatsApp advises choosing a unique name that only intended contacts will recognize. A username generator will be available to suggest ideas.

Cross-Platform Consistency

Creators, small businesses, and organizations can claim their existing Instagram or Facebook username on WhatsApp to maintain a consistent online presence.
