WhatsApp allows username reservations ahead of feature launch

Meta's WhatsApp has begun allowing its 3 billion users to reserve usernames starting in June. Although the username feature is not yet active, users can claim their desired username now and start using it once the feature officially launches later this year.

Usernames will let people share their WhatsApp contact without disclosing their phone number. This is useful for those who want to be contacted on WhatsApp without sharing their number. Businesses may also find it easier to share a name rather than a phone number.

How to reserve a username

To reserve a username, go to Settings > Account and tap on the Username option under "Your Account." If setting up a username for the first time, a "Create username" option appears where you can type your preferred name. If the username is unavailable, WhatsApp suggests variations when you tap "Suggest a username."

WhatsApp is reserving certain usernames of public figures and entities, so those cannot be claimed. Users who already have a Facebook or Instagram username can log in via either service and reserve that handle as their WhatsApp username.

Changing and deleting your username

Once set, the username can be changed by going to the same menu and tapping the "Edit" button at the top right. Users can also delete their username.

Extra protection with a username key

WhatsApp also offers an extra layer of protection via a username key. Users can limit who can contact them by selecting from "Everyone" to "People who know my key" in the username menu. This means people who know the username must also enter a four-digit key before contacting the user for the first time. Users can save the key or generate a new one at any time.

The username feature will go live in the coming weeks. Until then, WhatsApp is only allowing reservations to avoid duplication.
