YouTube, owned by Google, has settled a lawsuit with a minor identified as "R.K.C.," who claimed social media platforms caused them harm, according to Reuters. The settlement terms are confidential. The same plaintiff has also filed suits against Meta, Snap, and TikTok, with trials set for next month.

This is the second settlement in such cases. In the first case, a 20-year-old woman known as "K.G.M." won $6 million in damages, with Meta paying $3 million and YouTube paying the other $3 million. YouTube vowed to appeal that decision, arguing it built a streaming platform, not a social media site.

YouTube currently faces thousands of similar lawsuits, making this settlement a test case for future litigation. In California state courts, over 3,300 lawsuits related to social media addiction are pending, while another 2,600 have been filed in federal court by individuals, school districts, municipalities, and states. Similar cases are also ongoing in Kentucky, New York City, and other US jurisdictions.

Meta and other platforms dispute claims that their services are addictive. However, an attorney in the first case stated that internal company documents prove they prioritized profits over children's well-being.
