YouTube updates Shorts with more TikTok-like features
YouTube introduces new Shorts features including a clear screen mode, heart icon, 2x speed playback, and removal of the dislike button.

YouTube is rolling out a series of updates to its short-form video platform Shorts, making it even more similar to TikTok. In a blog post on Thursday, the company announced a new "clear screen" mode that removes icons and text from the video being watched, allowing for an unobstructed viewing experience.
The update also replaces the traditional "thumbs-up" button with a heart icon, aligning with TikTok's design. Users can now watch Shorts at 2x speed by holding down the edge of the screen and lifting their finger to return to normal speed. To lock the 2x speed, one can press the player and swipe down. Additionally, a mute function is available by tapping the video and selecting the mute button.
These features have long been staples of TikTok, which has offered a similar "clear mode" for years, along with video speed controls and a heart-shaped like button.
Alongside these additions, YouTube has removed the dislike button. The company encourages users to provide feedback by using the "Not interested" or "Don't recommend this channel" options found in the three-dots menu.
