YouTube has announced a series of changes to its short-form video platform Shorts. One of the key updates is the ability to double the playback speed. According to the company, this feature is designed to help users "absorb information more quickly or find your favorite part faster."

In a move aimed at creating a more positive online environment, YouTube has also removed the dislike button from Shorts. Instead, users can now use "Not Interested" and "Don't recommend this channel" options to disincentivize certain content. The thumbs-up button has been replaced with a heart emoji.

Additionally, YouTube is introducing a "Clear Screen mode" that temporarily hides all icons and text during playback, offering an uncluttered viewing experience.

The exact rollout timeline has not been specified; the company only stated that the features would be introduced over time. YouTube launched Shorts in 2024, later than competitors like TikTok and Instagram Reels. Despite the late entry, the platform has gained significant traction. As of June 2025, Shorts averaged 200 billion daily views, according to CEO Neal Mohan. A report earlier this year also indicated that Shorts are increasingly watched on TV screens, with about 2 billion hours of content consumed monthly via televisions.
