Lightning Strikes Church Tower in Tampere During Wedding and Baptism Ceremony
During a thunderstorm on Saturday, lightning struck the bell tower of an Orthodox church in Tampere, causing a fire but no injuries, while a wedding and baptism were taking place.
On Saturday afternoon, lightning struck the wooden top of the bell tower of the Orthodox Church of Alexander Nevsky and St. Nicholas in Tampere, Finland, igniting a fire. Firefighters worked until late evening to bring the flames under control. Fortunately, no one was injured. At the moment of the strike, the church was hosting both a wedding and a baptism ceremony.
"The lightning struck with such force that the lights flickered like in a disco," a church warden told Yle. The newlywed couple were surprised but not discouraged. The groom later shared on Instagram: "Coincidence? A sign? We may never know. But one thing we know: in every storm, every darkness, and every unexpected turn, we choose each other."
Church representatives said on Sunday that the building itself was not heavily damaged, though the lightning destroyed the electrical and alarm systems. To extinguish the flames, firefighters had to remove the cross from the dome and dismantle part of the roof structure. The church will be closed during repairs. The church, built in 1899, is named after Alexander Nevsky and St. Nicholas.
