Young Northern Ireland side stuns Ukraine with 3-0 Nations League win
Northern Ireland fielded their youngest starting line-up since World War Two and beat Ukraine 3-0 in the Nations League. Manager Michael O'Neill praised the emerging talent as having 'no ceiling'.

Northern Ireland delivered a commanding 3-0 win over Ukraine in Trnava, Slovakia, on Friday night in a Nations League fixture, fielding a starting eleven with an average age of just 22 — the youngest in the team's history since World War Two.
Oxford United defender Ciaron Brown, the only starter over 25, opened the scoring in the ninth minute after a knockdown from Ruairi McConville, and later added a second with a header. In between, teenager Isaac Price doubled the lead, set up by a cross from 19-year-old debutant Kieran Morrison.
The result carries weight beyond the scoreline: in the past 12 months, only Sweden and France had managed to beat Ukraine. It marked a third straight clean sheet for Northern Ireland's defence, with full-backs Brodie Spencer and Terry Devlin also impressing alongside Brown and 20-year-old Blackburn Rovers centre-back Tom Atcheson.
Manager's praise
Manager Michael O'Neill said McConville and Atcheson have "no ceiling" and are ready to move up from Championship football, while acknowledging they will still make mistakes given the physical demands placed on them. He also praised Brown, who has stepped into a senior leadership role across three full matches while regular defender Dan Ballard recovers from injury.
The win also has broader implications for Northern Ireland's Nations League campaign: topping their group would secure promotion to League A for the first time and ease their path toward Euro 2028 qualification. The side had never previously won a Nations League away match, making this their biggest away result in five years.
