New 883-meter roller skating track opened in Liepaja's Horse Island
In Liepaja, the recultivation of the eastern part of Horse Island has been completed, along with a new 883-meter roller skating track, expanding active recreation options.

The Liepaja municipality announced that at the end of June, the recultivation of a 3.35-hectare area in the eastern part of Horse Island (Zirgu Sala) was finished, and a new 883-meter roller skating track was built. This is part of the project "Expansion of Outdoor Sports and Active Recreation Infrastructure in Horse Island, Liepaja."
During the work, bushes were cleared, trees tended, and plantings created. Lawns were established on 3.35 hectares, and plantings on 1,896 square meters. The new track is equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting and connected to the existing skating loop built in 2020.
On June 26, the construction was accepted for operation. The construction was carried out by SIA "A-Land," with supervision by SIA "Geo Consultants" and author supervision by SIA "BM-projekts."
The project is supported by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF), with total costs of €571,710, of which €517,660 is EMFAF funding and €54,050 from the Liepaja municipality.
The municipality is already working on the next and final phase of Horse Island's development. By summer 2027, it plans to build a health trail with a wooden boardwalk, exercise equipment, and rest areas, as well as new facilities in the parking lot. This project is expected to receive €637,500 from the European Regional Development Fund, with total costs of €750,000.
Horse Island was historically used as a landfill, but since 2017 the municipality has been gradually restoring it into a quality active recreation area.
