Liepāja continues development of Horse Island: new roller skating track completed
The eastern part of Zirgu sala (Horse Island) in Liepāja has been reclaimed and a new 883-meter roller skating track with LED lighting has been opened. The municipality plans to build a health trail and improve recreation infrastructure by summer 2027.

Reclamation and new track
At the end of June, reclamation of 3.35 hectares in the eastern part of Zirgu sala was completed. A new roller skating track, connected to the one built in 2020, was constructed. The work was carried out by SIA "A-Land", with supervision by SIA "Geo Consultants" and design supervision by SIA "BM-projekts". The project was funded by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) with €517,659, and the municipality contributed €54,050. Total cost: €571,710.
Next phase: health trail
By summer 2027, the municipality plans to implement the sixth reclamation project on the island. This includes reed mowing on 28 hectares of the lake, construction of a health trail with a wooden boardwalk, three rest areas, exercise equipment and benches, new restroom facilities in the parking lot, new plantings, and educational events. This phase is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) with €637,500, total planned cost €750,000.
History
Zirgu sala was historically used as a municipal landfill and later for storing organic waste. Since 2017, the municipality has been gradually restoring the area to create a quality recreational space.
