Joao Pedro signs improved Chelsea deal, announced until 2034
Chelsea striker Joao Pedro has agreed a new, improved contract officially announced as running until 2034, rewarding his standout debut season at the club.

Chelsea striker Joao Pedro, 24, has signed an improved new contract with the club. The Brazilian joined Chelsea from Brighton last summer for an initial £55m, with a further £5m possible in add-ons.
In his first season in west London, he scored 20 goals across all competitions and played a key part in Chelsea's Club World Cup triumph, netting three times during that campaign. He became the first Chelsea striker since Diego Costa to reach 20 goals in a season without scoring from the penalty spot.
Contract structure explained
When Joao Pedro first joined the club, his contract was announced as running until 2033, though it actually ran to 2032 with a club option for an additional year — a common practice at Chelsea, which typically includes such options when announcing contract lengths. His new deal is now described as running until 2034, even though it actually runs to 2032 with a two-year option attached. In effect, Chelsea have not shortened his contract but extended it on improved terms.
The approach serves two purposes: protecting the club's investment amid reported interest from Barcelona, and rewarding strong performances. Chelsea operate a strict wage structure but allow players to move into higher wage bands after impressive form, as previously done for Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson.
Joao Pedro has scored eight goals in seven pre-season matches and is expected to start Chelsea's Premier League opener against Fulham on Monday. His impact has also seen him take over the number nine shirt from Liam Delap, who is available for transfer for around £50m amid interest from other clubs.
