Zoox Issues Software Recall for 105 Robotaxis Due to Inability to Navigate Heavy Smoke
Zoox has issued a software recall for 105 of its robotaxis after an incident where a vehicle failed to safely navigate through heavy smoke from a fire, highlighting concerns about emergency response capabilities.

Autonomous vehicle company Zoox has initiated a software recall affecting 105 of its robotaxis following a June 20 incident where a vehicle encountered heavy smoke from a fire that had not been cordoned off with cones. According to Zoox's recall report, the robotaxi entered the scene, braked hard while attempting to steer away, and then came to a stop. Under remote guidance, it reversed, after which first responders placed cones blocking two of three lanes. Zoox stated this is the only time a vehicle has had such an issue with smoke, and the software update rolling out now enhances detection and response to heavy smoke.
This is the second software recall from Zoox in recent months; the previous one occurred in May 2025 after a collision with a passenger car in Las Vegas. The recall comes amid growing scrutiny of how autonomous vehicles handle emergencies. In early July, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent a letter demanding that autonomous vehicle companies address the problem of robotaxis interfering in emergency situations. The agency also plans to meet with companies by the end of July to discuss the issue.
Despite the setback, 2025 appears to be a growth year for Zoox. The company introduced an updated version of its robotaxi, announced plans to expand service areas in Las Vegas and San Francisco, and begin testing in entirely new cities.
