Zvejniekciems youth water sports club acquires two new sailing boats
The association 'Zvejniekciems Youth Water Sports Club' has purchased two 420-class sailing boats to expand training opportunities for young sailors.

To promote water sports and preserve sailing traditions, the Zvejniekciems Youth Water Sports Club has acquired two new 420-class sailing boats. According to club representatives, the boats are already available for youth training, allowing them to learn team sailing skills at a higher level.
The club invites interested individuals to join, emphasizing that sailing is not only a sport but also a "life school" that develops physical fitness, mental growth, character, and teamwork. The skills gained will be useful regardless of future career choices.
Founded in 2021, the club's students started with Optimist boats. After five years, they have transitioned to the 420 class, the next step in athletic development. Unlike Optimist and ILCA, the 420 boat is sailed by a two-person team who must cooperate to handle three sails – mainsail, jib, and spinnaker. This class is internationally recognized and serves as a preparatory stage for the Olympic 470 class.
In 2024, Zvejniekciems hosted the Latvian Championship in the 420 class, the first national championship in this class since the restoration of independence. The 420 class is now rapidly developing in both Latvia and Estonia.
The project "Development of Sailing Sports in Zvejniekciems" ran from May to June 2025. Total costs were €31,109.10, of which €27,000 came from public funding. Support was provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Rural Support Service, and the local action group "Jūras Zeme".
