Clashes in Albania as Protests Against Kushner Resort Turn Violent

Albanian police clashed with protesters outside parliament in Tirana on July 23, using water cannons and tear gas after demonstrators threw eggs and bottles at officers. The confrontation marked one of the few violent episodes in largely peaceful protests that have been ongoing for two months.

The protests are directed against a luxury resort planned by Jared Kushner, son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump, on the Adriatic coast. Activists accuse the project of fostering corruption and threatening local wetlands, home to flamingos. The movement is called the "Flamingo Revolution."

On July 23, hundreds of demonstrators pulled at fences surrounding the parliament building and chanted, "Thank you, Trump, for uniting us!" Police responded with water cannons. Prime Minister Edi Rama, a strong supporter of Kushner's project, claims the protests are orchestrated by his political opponents.

A protester named Pirro said he came to force the government to step down, calling Rama a thief. Another participant warned that protests would continue to pressure the government, or else Albania would be "sold off."

Albania's prosecution is investigating a Miami-based businessman for document forgery in the sale of land plots to a developer linked to Kushner. The same businessman is also accused of money laundering from cocaine trafficking, but denies all charges. Developers maintain the land deals are valid.

Kushner, who praised the resort plans after sailing along the coast with his wife, has declined to comment since protests erupted. Developers confirmed his involvement but have not disclosed details about his role or investment.

Earlier this year, violent clashes occurred when protesters demanded the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku over corruption; she was subsequently removed from office.
