The World Cup has seen two notable disciplinary actions. First, a United States player had his disqualification overturned, sparking discussion. Second, England defender Jarell Quansah has been handed an extra match ban.

Quansah received a red card in the match against Mexico in the 54th minute for a rough tackle on Jesus Gallardo. Despite being a man down, England won 3-2 and advanced to the quarterfinals. While a red card typically results in an automatic one-match suspension, FIFA added another game to Quansah's ban for dangerous play.

The 23-year-old plays for Bayer Leverkusen in the German Bundesliga, having joined from Liverpool in the English Premier League. Quansah will miss the quarterfinal against Norway and, if England progress, also the semifinal. He would be eligible to play in the final on July 19.

Quansah operates as a right-back, a position that has troubled England head coach Thomas Tuchel during the tournament. Before the quarterfinal, Tuchel expressed hope that Reece James would recover and be available against Norway.

World Cup quarterfinal schedule:

  • July 9 in Boston: France vs Morocco at 23:00
  • July 10 in Los Angeles: Spain vs Belgium at 22:00
  • July 12 in Miami: Norway vs England at 00:00
  • July 12 in Kansas City: Argentina vs Switzerland at 04:00
