An Estonian industry leader urges employers to take responsibility for integrating young people into manufacturing, warning that otherwise the country may remain at Europe's average income level.

Andri Haran, a representative of Estonia's industrial sector, states that although interest in technical education is growing rapidly, companies need to become more proactive in attracting youth. He argues that "smart" industry is the only way to raise living standards and requires commitment from all parties.

Education and Employer Role

Technical education in Estonia is developing: vocational training is gaining prestige, and cooperation between universities and businesses is deepening. More parents realize that a non-technical diploma does not guarantee employment. However, Haran warns that motivated young people must find a proper place in the professional environment. The bottleneck is that many employers still seek only experienced workers, without supporting internships.

Strategic Approach

Haran calls for abandoning the mindset that someone else will handle the training of young specialists. Companies must develop long-term strategies, including internships as a permanent budget investment. They should also reach out to educational institutions to collaborate during studies.

German and Swiss Example

He cites Germany and Switzerland, where long-standing traditions of personnel training ensure high competitiveness and wages. A typical German factory accommodates everyone – from interns to experienced masters. Even high-tech manufacturing includes students and young professionals.

Key to Prosperity

Haran emphasizes that Estonia's welfare level depends on the success of "smart" industry. If employers do not change their attitude, young people may lose the chance to prove themselves, and the country will not achieve higher income levels.
