England's World Cup last-16 match against Mexico has been pushed back by an hour because of severe weather. The game will now kick off at 02:00 BST on Monday (19:00 local time on Sunday). Heavy rain fell in Mexico City throughout the day, and there were reports of lightning near the Azteca Stadium, where the match is being played.

According to regulations, play cannot commence until at least 30 minutes have passed since the last lightning strike detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium. FIFA had earlier proposed moving the match to 19:00 BST on Sunday (12:00 local time), but later reversed that decision, keeping the original kick-off time unchanged.

The match will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, BBC Radio 5 Live, and the BBC Sport website and app. A shelter-in-place order had been issued at the Azteca Stadium because of the adverse weather.

FIFA does not have the authority to set its own rules for delays caused by severe weather; it must follow the advice of local authorities. In the United States, the recommendations of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) are used. NOAA states that if any lightning strike is detected within eight miles of a stadium, the game must be stopped. The same rules apply in Mexico.

FIFA said in a statement: "The safety and security of all individuals is FIFA's priority."
