Anthropic pauses token-based billing changes for Claude Agent SDK

Following developer backlash, Anthropic has temporarily halted its planned token-based billing changes for the Claude Agent SDK, which would have significantly increased costs for heavy users.

Anthropic announced on Monday that it is "pausing" the previously announced pricing changes for the Claude Agent SDK, which would have introduced token-based billing. The changes drew sharp criticism from developers. Developer Matthew Diakonov noted that using Claude with Opus as a primary coding assistant would cause users to blow past breakeven within the first week. The developers behind the code editor Zed also warned their users about a major cost increase.

Anthropic updated its billing support page to state that "for now, nothing has changed" and that the company is "working to update the plan to better support how users build with Claude subscriptions." Some users reported receiving similar notifications via email.

The sudden reversal comes just weeks after GitHub Copilot rolled out its own token-based billing changes, which caused sticker shock for many users. It also comes as Anthropic prepares for a possible initial public offering, having filed confidential papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

While the temporary reprieve is welcome news for Claude Agent SDK users, they should probably expect to bear the full costs of their extensive use before long. In April, Anthropic's Head of Claude Code Boris Cherny said "our subscriptions weren't built for the usage patterns of these third-party tools" and that the company wants to "be intentional in managing our growth to continue to serve our customers sustainably long-term."
