Surveys show public trust in AI keeps eroding despite industry growth

New polling and industry statements show public skepticism toward AI is deepening rather than fading, prompting even top executives to call it a business problem.

Despite rapid technological advances, artificial intelligence's public image has been slipping. Axios reported that the National Republican Senatorial Committee sent AI companies a memo warning that data centers are hurting the party's chances in a key Ohio election.

At the same time, a Pew Research study found that Americans' unease about AI is rising, with 52% now saying they are more concerned than excited about AI's growing role in daily life, up from 37% in 2021. A CNBC poll of young adults found most don't trust well-known AI industry leaders to act responsibly, while an Economist/YouGov poll found more than 70% of Americans believe AI is advancing too fast.

Business consequences

The Wall Street Journal reported that tech companies are facing a public relations backlash over plans to build data centers across the U.S., prompting them to sweeten deals with job guarantees, clean water investments and other local perks, including teacher bonuses in one Louisiana parish.

Many consumers say they don't see how AI improves their lives, yet feel they must absorb its costs. AI is increasingly associated with cheating in schools, use of others' intellectual property, and unwanted features pushed into everyday products. Meanwhile, younger consumers are showing growing interest in retro technology and offline activities.

Industry response

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky acknowledged the backlash is real, saying the industry hasn't shipped enough products that ordinary people actually want. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also said publicly that negative perception of AI reflects a genuine crisis of trust, and that companies need to deliver on major promises, such as advances in curing disease, to rebuild confidence.
