Doctor Diagnoses Rare Poisoning Thanks to 'House M.D.' Episode
In Germany, Dr. Jürgen Schaefer diagnosed a patient with cobalt poisoning from a hip prosthesis after recalling a similar case from the TV series 'House M.D.'
A German doctor solved a patient's lingering health issues by drawing on knowledge from a popular medical drama. The patient had suffered for months from severe symptoms including heart failure, fever, vision and hearing problems, and swollen lymph nodes. Initially, doctors even considered a heart transplant.
Dr. Jürgen Schaefer remembered the 7th season episode 'Family Practice' of 'House M.D.', in which Dr. House discovers that a patient's symptoms are caused by cobalt poisoning from a hip replacement. When Schaefer learned that his patient had recently undergone similar surgery, he ordered a blood test for cobalt levels.
The test revealed that fragments from a ceramic hip prosthesis were grinding against a metal component, releasing cobalt and chromium into the bloodstream. After the faulty prosthesis was replaced, the patient's heart function improved and all symptoms gradually disappeared.
