SEC Investigates AI-Focused Hedge Fund Situational Awareness After Steep Losses
The US Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating hedge fund Situational Awareness, subpoenaing banks that worked with it after the fund suffered major losses in a late-July AI stock downturn.

Situational Awareness, a hedge fund led by young former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has had a difficult month after previously drawing significant attention on Wall Street. The fund had concentrated heavily on artificial intelligence investments and for a time posted remarkable growth.
That changed at the end of July, when a downturn in AI-related stocks wiped out billions of dollars in value at the firm. Now, US federal regulators are reportedly examining the company as well.
According to The New York Times, the Securities and Exchange Commission has been issuing subpoenas to banks that did business with the hedge fund. The subpoenas reportedly target banks that supervised the fund's trading activity and provided it with funding. Regulators have asked these banks to preserve all related information, while noting that Situational Awareness has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
The company did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment, but told the Times that scrutiny of high-profile funds is not unusual and that it intends to cooperate fully with any regulatory requests.
Having publicly tied its fortunes closely to the AI boom, the firm may now stand as a cautionary example of how the industry's rapid growth is not guaranteed to continue unchecked.
