Driver Challenges Speeding Fine in Court, Citing Family Emergency to Save Mother from Heat
A Riga resident is contesting a €40 speeding fine in court, arguing that she exceeded the limit to rush to her mother's aid during a heatwave.

The Riga City Administrative Court heard a case where a driver appealed a fine issued by the Municipal Police for speeding. On July 25, 2025, at 2:31 PM, a speed camera on Liepāja Street in Riga recorded her car traveling at 44 km/h in a 30 km/h zone.
The woman explained that she was hurrying to save her mother from the summer heat. Her defense was based on human compassion and a family emergency, which she argued should take precedence over formal radar readings. The Municipal Police had imposed a €40 fine, but the driver considered it unjust and took the case to court.
The court's decision has not yet been announced. The case raises questions about whether emergency circumstances can justify traffic violations.
