No newborns named Jānis or Līga in Bauska region this year
For the first time this year, Bauska region has recorded zero newborns named Jānis or Līga, reflecting a nationwide decline in the popularity of these traditional Latvian names, with only 40 boys named Jānis and 6 girls named Līga across the country.

Although Bauska region still boasts one of the largest numbers of Jānis and Līga name holders in Zemgale – 1,269 and 294 respectively – the popularity of these traditional names among newborns is waning. Inese Dombrovska, deputy head of the Bauska Civil Registry Office, stated that this year no newborn in the region has been registered with the name Jānis or Līga. Last year, only one boy in Valles parish was named Jānis.
Nationwide this year, only 40 newborn boys were named Jānis and 6 girls named Līga. For comparison, next week 43,171 people named Jānis will celebrate their name day, which is 922 fewer than the previous year, while on June 23, 9,525 Līgas will celebrate, 54 fewer than in 2025, according to data from the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs.
Bauska region still has a relatively high number of Jānis and Līgas. For instance, Jelgava region has 811 Jānis and 182 Līgas, Jelgava city – 925 and 221, Dobele region – 765 and 170, Aizkraukle region – 1,058 and 184. Only Jēkabpils region, with 1,366 Jānis and 265 Līgas, has more.
