Bentley's upcoming Torcal EV pairs craftsmanship with a synthetic V8 soundtrack

Bentley is set to unveil its 2027 Torcal later this month, an electric SUV built on a Volkswagen Group platform shared with the electrified Porsche Cayenne. A journalist from The Verge recently got an early ride in a heavily disguised preproduction unit ahead of the official debut.

Both the exterior and interior of the test vehicle were concealed with black cloth and false body panels to hide its final design. Despite being noticeably smaller than the current Bentayga, the Torcal reportedly offers a spacious cabin and an exceptionally smooth ride, thanks to refined two-chamber air suspension and carefully tuned adaptive dampers that make a clear distinction between Comfort and Sport driving modes.

A crafted, fake V8 sound

One signature Bentley trait — a simulated engine note — received particular attention in the Torcal's development. Drawing inspiration from the brand's 1980s V8-powered Turbo R, the sound was recorded using a musician's drum beat rather than generated by a synthesizer. The goal is to reproduce subtle imperfections reminiscent of an analogue combustion engine, while also giving occupants auditory cues tied to torque delivery that can help reduce motion sickness. The sound is still being fine-tuned and has not been finalized.

Sustainability focus

Bentley says the Torcal will use door cards made from natural fiber instead of injection-molded plastic, and will offer a Merino wool interior option developed with UK company Fox Brothers. The Crewe, England assembly plant also follows strict requirements for renewable energy use, including solar power.

Output is expected to exceed 800 horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque, with a curb weight nearing 6,000 pounds. Bentley is targeting a range of over 370 miles, along with a peak charging rate of 400 kW that would allow a 10–80 percent charge in under 20 minutes. Pricing has not yet been announced.
